OTPF Quote:

All people need to be able or enabled to engage in the occupations of their need and choice, to grow through what they do, and to experience independence or interdependence, equality, participation, security, health, and well-being. (Wilcock & Townsend, 2008, p. 198)

Needs Assessment Results

Eden Hall campus offers many amenities to encourage students to be balanced and to engage in leisure exploration and participation.  According to the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF), leisure is defined as “a nonobligatory activity that is intrinsically motivated and engaged in during discretionary time, that is, time not committed to obligatory occupations such as work, self-care, or sleep.”  Leisure exploration is defined as “identifying interests, skills, opportunities, and appropriate leisure activities.”  “Planning and participating in appropriate leisure activities; maintain a balance of leisure activities with other areas of occupation; and obtaining, using, and maintaining equipment and supplies as appropriate” is leisure participation (American Occupational Therapy Association, 2008, p. 632).  Since Eden Hall campus offers a plethora of leisure activities, it was important to identify which amenities would interest those who visit the campus.
A survey was conducted to test the knowledge of Eden Hall campus, to gage the interests of the population Eden Hall serves, and to inquire if the participants felt balanced.  The first part of the survey was the “pie of life”.  Participants were asked to divide their lives into “pie pieces” and label each “slice” to reflect how much time they spent each week engaging in specific activities.  The activities were: rest and sleep, education, work, play, leisure, socializing, and daily self-care activities.  The second part of the survey asked the participants to check the five amenities offered by Eden Hall that they would be interested in.  The amenities were: swimming, hiking and nature walks, gardening, volleyball, croquet, bowling, archery, bicycling, bird watching, and photography.  The third part of the survey consisted of yes and no questions about Eden Hall as well as if the participants would use Eden Hall to achieve balance.

·      Description of individuals/groups who have contributed
Eden Hall serves many populations.  Chatham undergraduate and graduate students, Chatham alumni, as well as faculty and staff all have access to Eden Hall.  Graduate students at Eastside campus were chosen to participate in the survey.  Graduate students have a much busier schedule, and therefore were hypothesized to not be as balanced.  The survey was given to 93 graduate students, both male and female.  The graduate students were from the occupational therapy, physical therapy, physician assistant, and landscape architecture programs.
